Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antimicrobial antibiotic, which in the sensitive organisms interferes with protein synthesis. It is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms and inhibits the growth and multiplication of rickettsiae, mycoplasmas, Chlamydiae and actinomycetes. When administered orally, the powder is well resorbed, in the first place from the front part of the small intestines, and after 2-4 hours achieves efficient blood- and tissue-levels. Oxytetracycline is rapidly distributed in the body, its high concentrations can be found in the lungs, kidneys, liver, bile, spleen and bones. Most of it is excreted from the body unchanged, i. e. 20% of the dose via bile and intestines and over 50% through urine.

It can be given to some animals prior to meal, as top dressing (mixed priorly with a small portion of the ration). If given in drinking water, always prepare a fresh solution. Commonest duration of treatment is 3-5 days, which can be prolonged, if necessary.
